A native of Westport, CT, and proud alumna of Colby College (B.A., Theater and Dance/Religious Studies), Maddie Kurtz is a dance artist currently based in Rochester, NY, where she is completing her M.F.A. in dance performance and choreography at The College at Brockport, SUNY. Her written and choreographic research focuses on the intersections of training and performance practices within the divided worlds of American dance competitions and academia. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Maddie has worked administratively at the American Dance Festival, The Joyce Theater, and New York Live Arts. When she’s not performing or creating, Maddie is usually teaching yoga, Pilates, or Pure Barre classes throughout Rochester. She also has a not-so-secret obsession with dance competitions (and lyrical jazz dances to Celine Dion songs) which she feeds through her position as an adjudicator with multiple competitions, including StarQuest, Inspire, and the judging agency, Impact Dance Adjudicators.
